Now this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t give it your all. It means that you should provide even more, whenever you can. For example, you may believe that a collaborative approach works well for clients who are involved with multiple professionals (i.e. school counselors, primary care physicians, or psychiatrists). Let’s say you notice that your adolescent client is struggling to get through the school day without an emotional distress episode. Make the effort to get a release to coordinate an intervention plan with the school counselor or social worker. Present this plan to the parent, to keep them in the know. It may take a little extra time but that’s going above and beyond. It’s one of the easiest ways to help clients become loyal partners who will share your kindness and dedication with others.
